2008 SPECTRUM GRAND MASTER0000-00-00
Cathy and Arnie Fenner, the directors for Spectrum: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art, announced that this year's Grand Master Award has been presented to John Jude Palencar. The Spectrum Advisory Board – consisting of Rick Berry, Brom, Mark Chiarello, Leo and Diane Dillon, Harlan Ellison, Irene Gallo, Bud Plant, Don Ivan Punchatz, Tim Underwood, and Michael Whelan – reviewed a list of eligible artists and reached a consensus to confer the honor.
The Spectrum Grand Master Award is presented annually to a living artist whose career has spanned at least twenty years, whose work has achieved and maintained a high-level of skill and imagination, and who has inspired others with their art and attitude. The physical award is a pyramid, each side representing a different aspect of the fantastic field, sculpted by Joe DeVito which rests on a bronze base sculpted by Tim Bruckner. Previous recipients of the award are Frank Frazetta, Don Ivan Punchatz, Leo and Diane Dillon, James E. Bama, John Berkey, Alan Lee, Jean Giraud, Kinuko Y. Craft, Michael William Kaluta, Michael Whelan, H.R. Giger, Jeffrey Jones, and Syd Mead.
Artist and Illustrator, John Jude Palencar is a rarity among contemporary artists, mixing a meticulous technique reminiscent of the old masters with a unique, darkly surreal imagination. The influences of Hieronymus Bosch, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Andrew Wyeth combine with his own individualistic vision to paint visual allegories of netherworld landscapes, languidly beautiful people, and nightmarish creatures.
For more than twenty-five years he has created book covers and received honors for his contributions to the fieild of illustration, including Gold and Silver Medals from the Society of Illustrators, two Gold Book Awards from Spectrum, and four Chesley Awards from the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists (ASFA). Most recently John was presented the award for “Artistic Achievement” by ASFA at the World Science Fiction Convention held in Yokohama, Japan.
His work has appeared on hundreds of book covers in over thirty countries for such renowned authors as H. P. Lovecraft, Ursula LeGuin, Marion Zimmer Bradley, P.D. James, Charles deLint, David Brin and Stephen King to name a few. Time, Smithsonian, and National Geographic Magazine, and the Philadelphia Opera have employed his illustrative talents for their publications and productions. Palencar has also worked on entertainment projects for LucasArts, Paramount Pictures and Vivendi Universal.
He enjoys an on-going artist-in-residence program in County Kerry, Ireland, where his personal paintings were included in a special exhibit entitled, “Images of Ireland” held at the National Museum in Dublin.
He continues to create new work and has exhibited in numerous group and solo shows. Palencar has been invited to lecture and serve as an artist in residence at several colleges and universities across the country.
Origins: The Art of John Jude Palencar, a sumptuous tribute and collection of his book covers and personal works, was published by Underwood Books in 2007. John Lives in Ohio with his wife, Lee, and sons Kit and Ian.

"I just got through perusing Spectrum and have to thank you for putting out another collection of staggering and inspiring artwork. Both of you continue to educate those who don¹t know the truth already: Science Fiction and Fantasy illustration is not a stagnant backwater of the art world, but is instead where some of the most passionate, inventive and intelligent work is being done today."
