JOHN JUDE PALENCAR WINS!2010-01-30
Muse and Reverie by John Jude Palencar The Society of Illustrators has announced that John Jude Palencar will be the recipient of this year's Hamilton King Award for his cover for Muse and Reverie by Charles de Lint [Tor Books]. Widely considered to be one of the most prestigious awards an artist might receive, it is presented to the best painting in the Illustrators annual (as judged by past HKA-winners) and can only be won once in an artist's career. A list of past recipients reads like a who's-who of contemporary painters and includes the likes of Brad Holland, Robert Peak, the Dillons, Peter de Sève, Gregory Manchess, Michael Deas, Donato Giancola, Tim O'Brien, and Mark English. The award will be presented to John in June as part of a black-tie ceremony marking the Society's Hall of Fame inductees.

Illustrators 51 Grand Master Palencar is, of course, no stranger to readers of Spectrum: his frequent appearances in its pages through the years – with both his commercial and gallery work – has made him a perennial favorite of many. Underwood Books produced Origins  , his first collection (available from finer booksellers), and he's also well represented in the recently-mentioned art book devoted to the fiction of Stephen King, Knowing Darkness .

has just been released to the trade and, like every book in the series, it is a must have for anyone who is serious about modern illustration – in whatever guise it might come. Illustrators is marketed more to the professional community rather than the general trade so the press-run is not huge.
